Poppy Week

By Kate

For poppy week, our school has been selling poppies and poppy rulers etc. These donations will be sent to a charity to help raise money towards soldiers that are still fighting today. If you could please buy a poppy badge for any donation, you can help these brave soldiers do their job.

On Sunday, on the eleventh month, on the eleventh day and on the eleventh hour, across the country, people will be holding a two minute silence to reflect upon the fact that thousands of willing soldiers have sacrificed their lives to save ours. As we don’t go to school on Sundays, we shall be holding a silence on Thursday, when a special visitor is coming round to do it with us.

Around the school, classes will be making 100 poppies to celebrate 100 years from World War 1. We will be placing them in “Wobbly Wood” (where the big Horse Chestnut tree is) to help remind us what it is all about.  Can you believe that WW1 ended almost 100 years ago! Wow!

SPOOKTACULAR DISCO

By Arthur

Kids piled into the school hall from skeletons to super heroes. We were introduced to the ability to choose our songs by simply writing them down. We loved the healthy snacks with the new addition of crisps and chocolate (no added sugar). Everyone’s favourite song “Let it go”, has sadly not been included in this year’s spooky disco! We thank all the parents for this awesome disco. Happy Halloween!

Vikings!

By Olivia
This term in Neptune class we have been learning about the Anglo-Saxons.

If you want to find out some fascinating facts about these fearsome warriors, read on.

Sutton Hoo

Sutton Hoo is an ancient Anglo-Saxon burial site where a young woman once lived in a cottage. She was interested in history and eager to see what was underneath the large mound on her land. So, one dark gloomy day she paid for an archaeologist to dig up the biggest mound. They discovered lots of jewels, gold coins, weapons, helmets and …don’t forget the armour. All of this was found in a gigantic wooden ship (if you want to see the helmet and some of the other discoveries go to the British Museum in London).

Grendal

Have you ever wondered who the mythical creature Grendal was? Grendal is a green and horrid mythical Anglo-Saxon creature that hated noise. Every time Chief Daneswold threw a fun, loud and exciting party his ears started to hurt, so he usually burnt down the feasting hall. As you may be thinking, Chief Daneswold wasn’t happy about this.

Neptune school trip to Dover Museum

Did you know that a Bronze age boat was discovered in Dover in 1992? You can see its remians in Dover Museum. Did you know the Bronze age boat found in Dover is about 3000 years old and is made of wood, moss and bees wax?  It was held together by rope. Did you know that in Viking times they used moss and beeswax to keep their boats water proof? Its true!

BUZZING BUZZARDS

BUZZING BUZZARDS
by Brooke

Have you ever wondered what those strange brown birds are hovering above the field? Well now you can find out!

Those large birds are called buzzards! They are birds of prey, which have an impressive wingspan of between 109-140 cm. Wow! They have big wings! These buzzards are just as fierce as they look! Why? – because they need to consume flesh – but don’t worry, they only eat small mammals, such as mice, rats and rabbits. When food is scarce, they can also feed on worms and insects if they need to.

Once nearly hunted to extinction, these birds have made an almighty comeback, and are now thought to be the UK’s most common bird of prey.

You can normally find them in hedgerows and small woods, as well as on our school field! Buzzards mainly nest in trees and decorate them with fresh foliage.

Now next time you are on the field, be sure to listen carefully for a mewing noise. If you hear this sound, then you have just heard a buzzard’s call. If you are not successful, don’t worry you can listen to a buzzard’s call at www.british-birdsongs.uk

So now you know all the facts, get buzzard spotting!!
